In March 2015, we submitted a grant application
in hopes of obtaining funding for a Preschool Speech & Language
Program we introduced to our school district at the beginning of the
school year. On April 1st, we found out that we were one the recipients
of the LCAP Innovation Grant! We could not be more thrilled to have this
opportunity to share our knowledge with parents, encouraging them to
take an active role in their child's language and literacy development.
Outlined below is a detailed description of how our program facilitates
language development through literacy and play skills.
Each
week, we provide Speech & Language Therapy Services to 50-70 SBCUSD
preschool age students. Once a month we will have Language &
Literacy Group Sessions where parents will attend therapy with their
children. Each child will receive a book and educational toy to help
develop and
expand upon language and play skills that were learned in our classroom.
We believe that early intervention is the most effective
means to enhance early developmental skills and the preschool years are an
invaluable time that needs to be taken advantage of in terms of education. We
have found that early intervention is a profound need in our community,
especially for children who have already been identified as needing Special
Education Services. As our community progresses to educational values that
increasingly neglect early play skills, it is imperative for us to instill the
importance of language and play skills in the home. These skills are the
building blocks for student outcomes in their educational careers.
